Damaged gait and balance can recover with long-term abstinence from alcohol
A recent study has found that alcoholics’ gait and balance can continue to recover with long-term abstinence from alcohol, but deficits, especially eyes-closed standing balance, can persist. The findings were published online on September 15 in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.
The researchers examined 70 short-term (6-15 weeks) and 82 long-term (minimum 18 months to more than seven years) abstinent alcoholics, as well as 52 control individuals.
They found that there were persistent disturbed gait and balance in short-term abstinent alcoholics (STAA) and disturbed standing balance in long-term abstinent alcoholics (LTAA). There was overall less impaired performance of LTAA compared with STAA on gait and balance measures.
The study demonstrated that recovery of gait and balance, when visual support is available, may be attained with extended abstinence. On the other hand, the eyes-closed measures require greater balance and motor control.
According to the study authors, visual feedback makes balance easier by providing visual reference points for motor adjustment. Yet even with extended abstinence, brain structures important for balance, such as the cerebellum, may not fully recover, so impaired performance on the more difficult balance measures persists.
