Inflammation-and-Lung-CancerInflammation and Lung Cancer

by Steven M. Dubinett

Published by Springer

The book will provide a comprehensive perspective of the latest findings and summaries of progress made regarding inflammation and its connection to lung cancer. In recent years there have been various discoveries connecting inflammation and lung cancer and clearly there is growing interest in this area of cancer research. The link between unresolved inflammation and cancer has been well established with estimates that 15% of cancer deaths are inflammation-related. Evidence for this link includes the following: a) some inflammatory diseases are associated with increased risk of cancer development; b) inflammatory mediators are present surrounding and within most tumours; c) over-expression of inflammatory cytokines increases cancer development and progression in murine studies; d) inhibition of inflammatory mediators decreases cancer development and progression; and e) the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been found to decrease cancer incidence and delay progression. The volume will present aspects of the inflammatory tumour microenvironment (TME), its many roles in tumour progression and metastasis, including creation of a hypoxic environment, increased angiogenesis and invasion, changes in expression of micro-RNAs (miRNAs) and an increase in a stem cell phenotype. The book will also cover the mechanisms of inflammatory mediators.

Renal-Cell-CarcinomaRenal Cell Carcinoma (Oxford American Oncology Library)

by Nizar M. Tannir

Published by Oxford

University Press

Part of the Oxford American Oncology Library, Renal Cell Carcinoma is a concise handbook that addresses the complex management of patients with mRCC. The book begins with a review of the epidemiology, pathology, and biology of renal cell carcinoma followed by chapters on specific targeted therapies and managing complications. The final chapters discuss supportive and integrative care and emerging therapies. While patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) are now living longer with improved quality of life, the success of novel therapies for mRCC has created challenges for practising oncologists. Many patients who initially respond to targeted therapies ultimately develop progressive disease due to acquired resistance to these agents. Additionally, some patients do not respond at all to any of the currently approved targeted agents, underscoring the need for continued and concerted efforts to identify other relevant targets and pursue alternative therapeutic strategies.
